Sudan harvest Cecafa talent

By Emmanuel Muga BBC Sport, Dar es Salaam Sudan celebrated winning the Cecafa Challenge Cup The Sudanese side that were recently crowned Cecafa Challenge Cup champions, will provide 10 players for the Nile Crocodiles' African Nations Cup squad. The team, comprising mainly youth players, defeated Rwanda 4-2 on penalties to lift the regional title. Coach Tagel Abbas says the players were so impressive during the 11-team event they could now travel to Ghana. "We have already identified great talent to reinforce our senior team," Abbas told BBC Sport. "All the strikers (Modather Eltaab, Eltahir Hamad Musa, Sufian Salim and Abdelhamid Amarria), the goalkeeper (Akram Salim) will be promoted to the senior team. Amarria will join the Nile Crocodiles' Cup of Nations squad "Defenders Ahmed Elbasha, Khalid Hassan, Zriab Hussein and midfielders Saifeldin Ali Idris, Nasredn Omer will also join the provisional squad. "This team started preparing one-and-a-half months ago. "They have so far played a total of eleven matches, including six in the Cecafa championship, together as a group. "And match after match they have improved - they are now able to cope with all situations," he added. The coach said the team will set up a brief training camp in Khartoum before heading to Spain. While in Spain, they are scheduled to play Nigeria, the Ivory Coast and Morocco before heading to Ghana. Sudan are in Group C alongside Cameroon, Egypt and Zambia.

Missing Madeleine's parents issue Christmas plea

The parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann issued a video with a new plea for information about her whereabouts and a special Christmas message to their daughter to "be brave".

McCann disappeared more than seven months ago shortly before her fourth birthday during a family holiday in the Portuguese beach resort of Praia da Luz. Her parents, who Portuguese police have named as formal suspects, believe she was abducted from their holiday apartment as they had dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.

"Madeleine, it seems unlikely that you'll hear this, but just in case - it's mummy and daddy here," her mother Kate, said in the appeal, which included footage of Madeleine opening her Christmas presents from last year.

"Just know how much we love you Madeleine. We all miss you so much. We are doing everything we can Madeleine to find you. Be brave sweetheart, our only Christmas wish is for you to be back with us again."

Every twist and turn of the police investigation has been poured over in the British media and the story regularly makes front page news in the country's newspapers.

In the latest video recorded at their home in Rothley, central England, Madeleine's father Gerry said it would be the "hardest Christmas imaginable" for their family. He said someone must know what had happened to his daughter and where she was.

"That person has it within their power to show us the compassion to end this terrible ordeal for us," he said.

Kate McCann made a direct appeal to this person saying they could end "all this despair and anguish".

"At this time of year when so many families are coming together, we beg you to help us to be reunited with Madeleine. Please do the right thing and come forward," she said, barely holding back tears.

A week ago, the McCanns said Madeleine's younger siblings hoped Santa Claus would bring their missing sister home. They also said they had bought presents for their daughter and would try to make the festive season as normal as possible for their toddler twins, Sean and Amelie.

The couple has hired private investigators to help find their daughter after police named them as suspects in September. The only other suspect is a Briton living in Praia da Luz.

Despite a string of possible sightings and a huge police investigation, the girl's whereabouts remains a mystery. - Reuters

Hivi karibuni Mtanzania, ambaye ni Mhandisi wa Ndege, Omar Nundu (59), ameweka historia nchini kwa kuchaguliwa kuwa Rais wa Shirika la Kimataifa la Usafiri wa Anga Duniani (ICAO). Nundu, ambaye ni Mkurugenzi wa Uhusiano wa Kimataifa wa Mamlaka ya Usafiri wa Anga nchini (TCAA), anakuwa mtaalamu wa pili wa masuala ya anga kutoka bara la Afrika kushika wadhifa huo. Mwafrika wa kwanza kushika nafasi hiyo ni mhandisi wa ndege kutoka Uganda, E.Kasara, mwaka 1978. Nundu alipata nafasi hiyo katika uchaguzi uliofanyika Desemba 14, mwaka huu, mjini Montreal, Canada. Awali nchi za Jumuiya ya Maendeleo kusini mwa Afrika (SADC) zilimpendekeza Nundu agombee nafasi hiyo ya kuwa mmoja wa makamishna 19 wa Kamisheni ya ICAO. Akielezea kuchaguliwa kwake, Ofisa Habari wa TCAA, Abel Ngapemba, anasema kwamba Mhandisi Nundu aligombea nafasi hiyo kwa mara ya kwanza mwaka 2005 na hakufanikiwa. Katika uchaguzi huo wa juzi, Nundu alimshinda mpinzani wake Carlos Cirilo wa Brazil. Nyota yake ilianza kung’ara kwenye uchaguzi wa awali uliofanyika Novemba 30, mwaka huu, katika mji huo wa Montreal, ambapo alichaguliwa kuwa mmoja wa makamishna 19 wanaoingia kwenye kamisheni hiyo, kwa kipindi cha miaka mitatu ijayo. Nundu alichaguliwa kwa mara ya pili. Kwenye kamisheni hiyo, inajumuisha wataalamu waliobobea katika sayansi ya utaalamu wa usafiri wa anga, ambao wanapendekezwa na nchi wanachama wa ICAO. Kisha uchaguzi unafanywa na ICAO ili kupata makamishina hao 19, ambao nao wanamchagua rais wao, ambapo Nundu amepata nafasi hiyo. Nundu ni mtaalamu wa masuala mbalimbali ya ndege katika nyanja za hesabu, usafiri wa anga, ufundi wa ndege, utungaji sera za masuala ya usafiri wa anga. Ameoa na ana watoto wanne. Ni mwanachama wa Chama cha Wahandisi nchini tangu mwaka 1987. Pia ni mwanachama wa taasisi mbalimbali za kimataifa za Uingezera za masuala ya usafiri wa anga. Kwenye sekta ya usafiri wa anga, kitaifa na kimataifa, Nundu ana uzoefu wa miaka 30. Awali alikuwa akifanya kazi katika Shirika la Ndege la Tanzania (ATC). Miongoni mwa kazi alizofanya katika shirika hilo ni pamoja na matengenezo ya ndege, jambo ambalo lilizidi kumjengea utaalamu zaidi. Pia alifanya kazi katika Shirika la Ndege la Afrika Mashariki (EAAC), Mshauri wa Masuala ya Anga wa SADC na Chuo cha Uongozi na cha Nchi za Kusini mwa Afrika (ESAMI). Kuingia kwake kwenye kamisheni hiyo ya ICAO, kumeipandisha chati Tanzania kwa ujumla, kwa kuwa kamisheni hiyo ni muhimu sana. ICAO ndiyo chanzo cha sheria na taratibu zote za utengenezaji ndege, viwanja vya ndege, mitambo na utaratibu wote wa kuhakikisha kwamba usafiri wa anga duniani unakuwa salama. Wadhifa huo mkubwa duniani, unaifanya Afrika irudi kwenye historia yake baada ya miaka 60 iliyopita. Uchaguzi wa mwaka huu, umefanya Bara la Afrika kuwa na makamishna wawili, akiwemo H. Moussa kutoka Níger na Injinia Nundu. Katika historia ya Kamisheni ya Uongozi wa Ndege, Waafrika walioingia kwenye Kamisheni hiyo tangu mwaka 1947 ni watatu tu, ambapo wa kwanza alikuwa raia huyo wa Uganda, wa pili raia huyo wa Niger na wa tatu ni Injinia Ñundú. Ofisi ya kamisheni hiyo ipo Montreal. Uchaguzi huo wa Nundu unaonyesha kuwa Tanzania ina wataalamu wenye sifa zinazokubalika kiushindani duniani. Moja kati ya vitu muhimu ambavyo kamisheni hiyo inafanya ni pamoja na kutengeneza viwango vya kimataifa vyenye kulenga kuboresha usafiri wa anga na taratibu za uongozaji ndege duniani. Wataalamu wanaoingia ndani ya Kamisheni hiyo ni lazima wawe na ushindani wa hali ya juu ili kuwashinda wataalamu wa nchi nyingine duniani zenye wataalamu kama alivyo Injinia Nundu. Mwaka 2006 jopo la wataalamu hao 19, walimchagua kuwa Makamu wa Rais wa kamisheni hiyo, hivyo kuifanya nchi kutambulika kimataifa duniani katika nyanja ya masuala ya anga. Waangalizi wa kimataifa wa masuala ya usafiri wa anga, wameitembelea nchi mara kadhaa kuangalia shughuli za sekta ya usafiri wa anga na kufanya ukaguzi. Tanzania ina hati ya kuwa na anga salama kwa shughuli za usafiri duniani, jambo linaloifanya iwe na sifa kubwa kwa wawekezaji na watalii. “Sekta ya usafiri wa anga inafanya vizuri na iko makini kuhakikisha wataalamu wenye sifa na viwango wanapatikana, ikiwa ni pamoja na kuwagharamia mafunzo zaidi wataalamu ili kuhakikisha Tanzania inakuwa nchi ya mfano katika masuala ya usafiri wa anga duniani,” anasema Ngapemba. CIA 'kept' tapes from 9/11 probe

The tapes are said to show a simulated drowning technique A leaked memorandum from the former 9/11 commission says it made repeated requests to the CIA for information on the interrogation of al-Qaeda suspects. But ex-commission executive director Philip Zelikow says the CIA did not hand over tapes that have since come to light, the New York Times reported. The CIA later erased the footage, which allegedly contains images of abuse. The memo urges a further investigation into whether the agency acted illegally by withholding the recordings. The CIA says there was no specific request for the tapes, which reportedly contained images of interrogation techniques including water-boarding, which simulates drowning. The CIA denies torture. 'Clearly obstructed' The agency filmed the footage in 2002 and erased it in 2005, a year after the commission ended its work. The commission conducted an internal review earlier this month after the deleted CIA tapes came to light. A copy of Mr Zelikow's findings, dated 13 December, was obtained by The New York Times. His memorandum notes the commission asked the CIA in 2003 and 2004 for "documents", "reports" and "information" relating to interrogations. Mr Zelikow's seven-page findings conclude "further investigation is needed" to determine if the CIA's withholding of the tapes violated federal law. It notes that it is illegal to "knowingly and wilfully" withhold or "cover up" a "material fact" from a federal inquiry. The CIA insisted on Saturday it had gone to great lengths to help the commission, which was set up to investigate al-Qaeda's 11 September 2001 attacks on the US. The agency's spokesman Mark Mansfield said: "Because it was thought the commission could ask about tapes at some point, they were not destroyed while the commission was active." But one of the commission chairmen, former Democratic congressman Lee Hamilton, told the New York Times the CIA had "clearly obstructed" the commission's work. The CIA and the Department of Justice have already launched an inquiry into the erasing of the tapes.
